Texas will face Alabama for the National Championship.
Last night Texas (#3) defeated Nebraska (#21) 13 to 12 on a 46-yard field goal by Hunter Lawrence as time expired. Texas remains undefeated and will meet Alabama in January in the National Championship Game.
This was a really ugly win. Nebraska’s defense played great, as did the Texas defense. No one expected much scoring by Nebraska, but Texas was supposed to score. Despite being a 14 point underdog, Nebraska was 1 second away from pulling off a huge upset.
Nebraska took a 12 to 10 lead with a 42-yard field goal with 1:44 left. Based on Texas’ offensive performance so far in the game, it didn’t look like they were going to be able to pull off another last minute comeback. Nebraska looked to have the game won. But the wheels fell off for Nebraska.
First, they kicked the ball out of bounds giving Texas the ball at the 40-yard line. Then McCoy completed a pass to Jordan Shipley for a first down. But Nebraska made a horse-collar tackle on Shipley adding another 15 yards to the completion which put Texas in field goal range. At this point, it looked like Texas was going to pull off the comeback. It was down to 3rd and 13 from the 29 yard line. Texas had one time out with 8 seconds left. And then it happened.
Colt McCoy hung on to the ball too long as he rolled right and threw the ball out of bounds under heavy pressure from the Nebraska defense. The clock was down to 0 seconds as the Nebraska sidelines flooded onto the field with an apparent upset victory. But after a review, 1 second was added to the clock giving Texas the opportunity to kick the game winning field goal. And the rest is history.
