How do you beat Nebraska one week and then lose to lowly Iowa State the next week? This is the worst Texas team that I’ve seen in a decade. It’s embarrassing. I’m too disgusted to write any more.

Finally something good to write about Texas after 2 straight loses to UCLA and OU. Unranked Texas upset #5 Nebraska 20-13 on Saturday on the road in Lincoln. Nebraska receivers dropped just enough TD passes to allow Texas to hang on to an early lead. The Texas defense was good enough to have Nebraska’s Heisman Trophy candidate QB yanked in the 3rd quarter. The Texas offense opened up the playbook early allowing QB Garrett Gilbert to make things happen with his feet. Clearly Nebraska was not prepared for this as Gilbert scored 2 rushing TDs early. Hook ‘em Horns!
Why Monopolies are Bad – DirecTV, NFL Sunday Ticket, and Terrible Customer Service

DirecTV = Terrible Customer Service
DirecTV has an exclusive on NFL Sunday Ticket in the US. They use this very effectively to grab subscribers from cable and to lock them in for 2 years. I’m one such person.
NFL Sunday Ticket is great, when it works. It’s expensive, but it’s the only way I can watch Cowboys games in San Francisco, plus I love the Red Zone channel. Today I missed both because of an incorrect satellite configuration (a configuration that was done by DirecTV).
I called DirecTV to resolve the issue and request a pro-rated refund for the week since I didn’t get to see what I wanted to see. They wouldn’t issue a refund. The person on the phone was nice and seemed to understand, but said she couldn’t do anything. It’s great to be a monopoly.
It’s clear that DirecTV has adopted the mindset that customers will do anything to keep getting NFL Sunday Ticket and that they’re locked in to the service, so why bother doing anything to keep them happy. They’re probably right, but this is exactly why monopolies and exclusives are bad for customers. Another great example is AT&T and the iPhone.
When I asked about my contract and service level, I learned I have 11 months left. I found out I could downgrade and save $33/mth (of course, I’d lose some channels). When I offered them the choice of issuing me a refund for 1 week of service for NFL Sunday Ticket vs me downgrading by $33/mth going forward, they still wouldn’t issue the refund. I immediately downgraded my service. They just lost $33/mth * the 11 remaining months on my contract or $363 in revenue to save issuing a one-time refund that couldn’t have been more than $15-$20. Plus they’re going to lose me as a subscriber at the end of that 11 month period, so they’re going to be losing even more future revenue and a little piece of all important market share. Unbelievable!

UCLA celebrates after one of their many scores in front of a Texas home crowd in excess of 100,000.
I thought they’d probably lose one or two games this year, but not to UCLA. Texas lost 34 to 12 in Austin in a mistake-filled game. Texas looked bad on offense, defense, and special teams.
Next up are Oklahoma and Nebraska. This may be a really long, tough season.

The Cowboys looked TERRIBLE on offense. They’ve now lost 2 games to 2 mediocre teams. This week the Cowboys lost to the Bears 27 to 20. It’s time for a new head coach and a new offensive coordinator.
Texas Opens Up The Playbook With Limited Success

#6 Texas beat unranked Texas Tech 24 to 14 thanks to an impressive defensive effort that made up for a turn-over and mistake filled offensive effort. Texas threw the ball around a lot more this game with 3 interceptions to show for it. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win.
Texas jumped out to a 14 to 0 lead in the first quarter and looked like they were going to run away with the game. But then the mistakes started. Texas turned the ball over 4 times and had numerous drive-killing penalties on offense.
The Texas defense saved the day taking the ball away 3 times, while holding the Tech offense to 7 points and 144 yards. Tech’s other 7 points was scored by their defense on a interception return for a touchdown.
The Longhorns are going to have to play much better if they’re going to beat #7 Oklahoma and #8 Nebraska in October.
Texas Got Their Passing Game Going This Week

Texas beat Wyoming 34 to 7 after another solid performance for the offense with zero fumbles and zero interceptions. Garrett Gilbert completed 22 of 35 passes for 222 yards, 1 TD, and 0 interceptions. The defense held Wyoming to just one TD; however, the they didn’t come up with any interceptions or fumbles. That’s disappointing considering the talent that Texas is putting on the field on that side of the ball. But overall, it was a solid performance. Texas appears to be ready for Texas Tech this coming week.
Texas Finally Finds a Running Game

This wasn’t an exciting offense to watch, but it was effective as Texas beat Rice 34 – 17. The Longhorns had 197 yards rushing on 46 carries averaging 4.3 yards a carry. They ran the ball more than they threw it and gained more yards rushing than passing. Even more important was the fact that all 3 backs held on to the ball. Both Newton and Johnson looked good going for 61 and 59 yards each. Newton had 3 rushing TDs. The offensive line looked good too. It will be another 2 weeks before we see how they do against better competition when they go to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech.
